University boat race

My youngest daughter Annebelle and I were at the Bosbaan today, near Amsterdam, where she had a university boat race. Rowing teams from all over The Netherlands were present. The weather was perfect, with only a light breeze and lots of sunlight.

It was difficult being there at first, for both my daughter and I, but the lively atmosphere brought back lots of good memories. More than twenty five years ago, my husband and I took part in the same rowing championship, in a men's coxed eight by SKADI  (Rotterdam). My husband being the stroke oarsman and I the (slightly too tall) cox. Standing there beside the lake, I could still remember the power and the synchronicity of the boat and its men. The feeling was simply fantastic!

My daughter Annebelle was one of the crew (first one bow) of a coxed four by ASOPOS (Leiden) and took part in the 500 metres. The girls were afraid they would finish last, but fortunately they ended somewhere in between. My husband would have been so proud!  I thought I would share some photo's with you.

Wishing you a Happy Sunday!

Love,

Madelief x

  21. Lieve Madelief,

  23. Dear Madelief - this lovely post took me down memory lane too. H was a big rower before university and when he was at university, and so was my eldest son. Many are the occasions that I have stood on the riverbank too shouting for them both over the years.
Well done to Annabelle - there were very few women who rowed when I was young, not so now.
Your memories are special, it is good to remember.

  56. My dear and wonderful Madelief,

Thank you for visiting my post; my mother left me 27 years ago, and this poem on my post was written only 3 weeks ago. I only posted it because I am so busy that I have not had time to search for lovely photos, write something decent, and so I decided to post my poem.....I hope it was not too difficult for you, but since you visited, left me a comment so graciously, I am guessing that at least, you are a brave woman and a most kind friend. I hope to return to lighter things for my next post. In the meantime, bless you my friend, and we are here for you! Anita

  64. Dear Madelief! How wonderful to read about the rowing tournament with your dear daughter. I love the rowing sport, simply because I have a relationship with it...My brother-in-law was rowing when he was younger and is still at the club. In the town here it's great traditions with rowing. And my youngest grandchild is very active in age of 11 years. He already has 14 medals and he love the sport. And I am a very proud grandmother...I think you do very right things, like this, with your daughter. It's very important for both of you, if you can manage things like this. I am thinking of you every day. God bless. Unn.
